Vans Agnew Monument

A lonely obelisk on the high ground of the old Multan Fort marks the spot where the British political agent Patrick Vans Agnew and his assistant Lieutenant William Anderson were murdered on 20 April 1848 by soldiers of the Sikh governor Diwan Mul Raj. The killings sparked the Second Anglo-Sikh War, which ended a year later with the storming of Multan and the British annexation of the Punjab.

The monument, erected by the British in 1849, is a plain stone column inscribed with the officers' names and a verse from the Book of Revelation. It is one of the few visible reminders of the British occupation on the fort mound, surrounded by the much older shrines and the ruins of the citadel that the British themselves blew up.
