The walled city of Multan is the dense, low-rise old town that wraps around the fort mound — a couple of square kilometres of narrow lanes, courtyard houses, mosques, shrines, brass workshops, sweet shops and bazaars. It was originally entered through six great gates: Bohar, Pak, Haram, Delhi, Lohari and Daulat (now vanished). The defensive walls themselves are largely gone, but the gates survive as oddly stranded brick portals on the modern ring road.
A walk through the walled city is the single best thing a visitor can do in Multan. Start at the Clock Tower on the western edge, head east through Chowk Bazaar with its brass and copper, dip into the lanes around the Wali Muhammad Khan Mosque, climb up to the fort mound for the great shrines, and exit through Bohar Gate past the Shah Yousaf Gardezi shrine. The streets are too narrow for cars; rickshaws can pick you up at the gates.
