Kaleiçi — literally "inside the castle" — is the walled old town that sits on a low bluff above Antalya's Roman harbour. It is the historical and tourist heart of the city: a compact labyrinth of narrow lanes, restored Ottoman wooden houses, Roman and Seljuk monuments, boutique hotels, carpet shops, and restaurants. The walls that ring it are real — Roman, Byzantine, and Seljuk stonework patched together over two millennia.
Despite its tourist intensity, Kaleiçi retains enough genuine character to reward unhurried wandering. The lanes between the monuments are residential in places, with neighbours hanging laundry above the cobblestones. The best strategy is to walk in without a plan, get mildly lost, and trust that you will eventually come out at the harbour or at Hadrian's Gate.
