Fatih Mosque stands on one of Istanbul's most important Byzantine and Ottoman sites. The original mosque was commissioned by Sultan Mehmed II after the conquest of Constantinople on the former site of the Church of the Holy Apostles, the burial place of several Byzantine emperors. The present complex is later, but the setting and history make it one of the city's major mosque stops outside Sultanahmet.
