Yedikule Fortress grew around the Golden Gate of the Theodosian Walls, once the ceremonial entrance to Constantinople. After 1453 it became an Ottoman stronghold, treasury, and prison, and its seven towers still make it one of the clearest places to read the city's landward defenses.
