German Fountain

This elegant octagonal gazebo fountain at the northern end of the Hippodrome was a diplomatic gift from Kaiser Wilhelm II to Sultan Abdulhamid II, commemorating the German emperor's 1898 visit to Istanbul. Built in Germany and shipped piece by piece, it was assembled on site and inaugurated on Wilhelm's birthday in January 1901. The neo-Byzantine design features eight marble columns supporting a dome lined with golden mosaics inside, a detail most visitors miss if they don't duck underneath. It sits across from Sultan Ahmed I's mausoleum, making it easy to combine with a visit to the Blue Mosque and the other Hippodrome monuments nearby.
