Kadıköy Market

The Asian side's buzzing food bazaar of fish, produce, pickles, and street eats

The Kadıköy market — centred on Güneşlibahçe Sokağı and the lanes around it — is the best food market on Istanbul's Asian side and one of the city's great eating destinations. Fishmongers display the morning's catch on ice, greengrocers stack seasonal produce, and specialist shops sell olives, cheeses, spices, Turkish delight, dried fruit and nuts, and barrels of pickles. It is a working market for locals, not a tourist set-piece, which is exactly its appeal.

Come hungry: between the stalls are some of the city's most beloved small eateries, from the famous pickle juice (turşu suyu) to fish sandwiches, börek, baklava, and Turkish coffee. Graze your way through, follow your nose, and let the crowds carry you. It is a short walk uphill from the Kadıköy ferry pier, making it the natural first stop on a day across the water.
