Arthur Circus

A round green of weatherboard cottages from the 1840s — Hobart's prettiest single piece of streetscape

Address Arthur Circus, Battery Point
Admission Free; public space

A small, unexpectedly perfect circular village green ringed by sixteen tiny weatherboard and stone cottages, laid out in the 1840s for the families of soldiers and seamen stationed at the Battery Point gun battery. The cottages are tiny (most only two or three rooms), painted in cheerful pastel colours, and lovingly maintained — the whole circle is heritage-listed and feels more like a Cornish village than an Australian city.

Walk out from Salamanca via Kelly's Steps and Runnymede Street to find it; the diversion takes less than five minutes and is the single most photographed corner of Hobart. A bench in the middle of the green is a fine place to sit on a sunny afternoon.
