Sullivans Cove

The waterfront precinct — docks, ferry terminals, museums, and the head of the harbour

The historic harbour of Hobart, named after John Sullivan, a colonial secretary in London who never visited. Sullivans Cove is the neighbourhood that takes in Constitution Dock, Victoria Dock, the long sweep of Hunter Street (where the original government granaries still stand), Mawson Place, Macquarie Wharf, and Brooke Street Pier. It is the working harbour, the cruise-ship terminal, the ferry port, and the social hub of the city all at once.

Most of Hobart's tourist sights cluster within ten minutes' walk of here. The walking circuit — Constitution Dock to Mures, around to Hunter Street, past the Mawson statues, through Mawson Place, and up to Salamanca — is the best single walk in the city. Boats moored along the docks include fishing punts, Antarctic supply ships, the Lady Nelson sail-training brig, and the occasional visiting tall ship.
