Sandy Bay

Leafy waterfront suburb south of Battery Point — University of Tasmania, beaches, and the Wrest Point casino

The genteel waterfront suburb immediately south of Battery Point, climbing the slopes between the Derwent and the mountain. Sandy Bay is mostly residential — large weatherboard and Federation houses, gardens, and the University of Tasmania main campus. The Sandy Bay Beach at Long Beach is a sheltered swimming spot popular with locals on hot summer afternoons; Nutgrove Beach, further south, is a longer sandy stretch with a popular café.

The most visible landmark is Wrest Point, the 17-storey 1973 hotel and casino on a small headland — Australia's first legal casino, and visible from across the harbour. The lower-rise Sandy Bay shops along Sandy Bay Road have good neighbourhood cafés (try Daci & Daci's outpost or Pigeon Hole) and a Tasmanian-only bookshop called Hobart Bookshop.
