Five bronze figures on the waterfront honouring the Antarctic explorers who left from Hobart

Address Mawson Place, Hobart
Admission Free; outdoor public art

A quiet, easily missed set of five bronze figures on the waterfront at Mawson Place, looking out across the Derwent and (notionally) south to Antarctica. Sculpted by Stephen Walker and installed in 2001, the statues honour the long list of polar expeditions that have left Hobart for Antarctica — Borchgrevink, Drygalski, Mawson, Shackleton, and the modern Australian Antarctic Division supply ships that still depart from this dock.

Hobart's claim as an Antarctic gateway city is real: the Australian Antarctic Division is headquartered in Kingston, the French Antarctic supply ship L'Astrolabe and the Australian RSV Nuyina both use Hobart as their home port, and Antarctic scientists are a regular sight in the waterfront cafés. Combine with the Mawson's Huts Replica Museum a few metres away.
