Kangaroo Bluff Historic Site preserves a 19th-century coastal battery at Bellerive, built to defend the Derwent when imperial anxieties still shaped Hobart’s harbour. The earthworks, gun positions, and stone structures are modest, but the setting gives the site its power: water, city, mountain, and military geometry in one view.
It is a short visit, best combined with Bellerive village or a ferry-and-walk outing from central Hobart. Come for the views as much as the fortifications, and bring a little imagination; the site is quiet now, but it once formed part of the colony’s defensive ring.
