The working heart of Hobart's waterfront — a small rectangular basin lined with fishing boats, floating fish punts, and bobbing pleasure craft. On 28 December each year, the surviving boats of the Rolex Sydney–Hobart Yacht Race arrive after a brutal three-day downwind run from Sydney; the dock is packed, the pubs along Hunter Street are full, and the city's biggest party of the year unfolds on the cobblestones.
The rest of the year, Constitution Dock is the place to eat fish and chips. Flotilla of moored punts — Flippers, Mures Lower Deck, and one or two others — serve fresh-caught flake, trevalla, and scallops on disposable trays; eat them on the dock wall watching the boats and the seagulls. The neighbouring Mures Upper Deck does sit-down seafood in the building above.
