Built between 1868 and 1874 in dark Tasmanian sandstone in a confident Gothic Revival style, with a square tower that dominates the lower end of Murray Street. The interior is unexpectedly tall and dim, with a fine Walker organ, stained glass by Hardman of Birmingham, and a series of memorials to early colonial Tasmanians (and the men killed in the colony's various wars). The acoustic is excellent — the cathedral hosts free Friday lunchtime organ recitals during term time.
The cathedral close, with its mature trees and quiet lawns, is one of the rare patches of calm in the CBD. Worth a brief visit if you are walking up Macquarie Street between the waterfront and Salamanca.
