Queens Domain

230-hectare hilltop park between the CBD and the Botanical Gardens — lookouts, native bush, and the rare grasslands locals call simply 'the Domain'

Address Queens Domain, Hobart
Admission Free

A 230-hectare patch of native bush and grassland on a rocky hill above the CBD, set aside in 1860 and remarkably unchanged since. The Domain has the best summit lookouts in the inner city — particularly the Cenotaph at the western end and the Beaumaris Zoo Lookout at the southern edge, both with sweeping views over the Derwent and Hobart's bridge. Within the park lie the Royal Tasmanian Botanical Gardens, the TCA Cricket Ground, the Domain Athletic Centre, and the small Beaumaris Zoo ruins where the last known Tasmanian Tiger died in 1936.

The Domain is the city's main running and cycling park, with paved paths along the ridgeline and through the grasslands. Locals walk dogs here at sunset. The native grassland at the northern end is one of the last surviving stands of the lowland Tasmanian grassland ecosystem.
