Elwick Racecourse is Hobart's main horse-racing venue, best known to visitors when a race day or major meeting is on. The grounds sit north of the centre and connect the city to a long Tasmanian racing tradition rather than to the harbour-and-mountain image most travellers arrive with.
There is little reason to go when nothing is scheduled. With a meeting on, though, it can be a sociable afternoon and a different slice of Hobart life, especially around larger summer racing events.
