Albergo dei Poveri

Albergo dei Poveri is one of Naples' most startling unfinished buildings: a vast 18th-century Bourbon almshouse designed by Ferdinando Fuga to house, train, and discipline the city's poor. The facade runs for hundreds of metres, giving the place the scale of a palace even though its original five-courtyard plan was never completed.

The building has had a hard life, with earthquakes, neglect, and partial reuse all leaving marks. Parts are now used for exhibitions and events, but even from outside it is worth seeing for the sheer ambition of the project.
