Toledo Metro Station

The Toledo station on Line 1 of the Naples Metro is regularly cited as one of the most beautiful metro stations in the world. Spanish architect Óscar Tusquets designed the station around the theme of light and water, with shimmering blue mosaic tiles that intensify in colour as you descend below street level. The effect is of going underwater.

The wall mosaics by artist William Kentridge depict the history and identity of Naples and run the full length of the platforms. You can visit the station simply to see the art without necessarily taking a train; many visitors descend just to photograph the escalators and walls. Entry is free with a metro ticket or at off-peak hours.

A story
Toledo station opened in 2012 after years of construction that repeatedly uncovered archaeological remains, including a Spanish-era fortification and Greek-era objects. The art installation descends through different historical strata — the deeper you go, the older the world portrayed around you.
