San Lorenzo Maggiore

A Gothic church on Via dei Tribunali with a remarkable surprise beneath it: excavations under the floor have revealed the ancient Greek and Roman remains of Neapolis's marketplace, including the macellum (meat market), a treasury, a bakery, and sections of the ancient street. The underground tour descends through 2,500 years of urban history in 30 minutes.

The church above is architecturally notable for its French Gothic apse — unusual in Naples — and contains the tomb of Catherine of Austria, wife of Charles of Calabria, carved by Tino di Camaino in 1325. The combination of a fine medieval church with an extraordinary archaeological site below makes San Lorenzo Maggiore one of the most complete experiences in the Centro Storico.

A story
Boccaccio claimed to have first seen his muse Fiammetta — later identified as Maria d'Aquino, illegitimate daughter of King Robert of Naples — in the church of San Lorenzo Maggiore on Holy Saturday 1336. The encounter inspired most of his early work. Whether it happened here exactly, or at all, the story belongs to this church.
