The main east-west street of the ancient city, running parallel to Spaccanapoli through the densest part of the historic centre. Via dei Tribunali follows the line of the ancient Greek decumanus — the major east-west road of Neapolis — and has been a commercial street for 2,500 years. Today it is one of the most animated streets in the city, lined with churches, pizza shops, street food vendors, and the entrances to several important monuments.
Notable stops along the route include the church of San Lorenzo Maggiore, beneath which you can descend into the Greek and Roman remains of the ancient marketplace, and the Pio Monte della Misericordia, which houses Caravaggio's "Seven Works of Mercy" in its chapel — one of the greatest paintings in Naples and rarely crowded.
