Catacombs of San Gaudioso

Early Christian catacombs beneath Naples’ Sanità district, known for tombs and macabre frescoes.

The Catacombs of San Gaudioso are one of Naples’ most atmospheric underground sights, lying beneath the Sanità district. They combine early Christian burial spaces, later aristocratic tomb practices, and macabre frescoes that feel unmistakably Neapolitan.

They are close in theme to the Catacombs of San Gennaro but not simply the same visit. San Gaudioso is smaller and more intimate, and it works especially well as part of a Sanità walk that includes churches, street life, and the neighbourhood’s ongoing revival.
