Naples Cathedral

Naples Cathedral, also known as the Cattedrale di San Gennaro, is the city's main church and one of the key stops in the historic center. The present cathedral stands over earlier Christian basilicas, and its chapels, mosaics, and layered structure show how many versions of Naples are built into the same site.

The cathedral is closely tied to the cult of Saint Januarius, Naples' patron saint. Even outside festival days, it is worth visiting for the scale of the interior and the sense of civic devotion around the saint.
