Foro Italico

The Foro Italico is the long seafront promenade that runs along the eastern edge of the old town from the harbour at La Cala south past the Kalsa. It was opened in 1582 as a parade route for the city's nobility and has been the city's main esplanade ever since, even as the buildings behind it have decayed.

In the late afternoon the wide path fills with joggers, cyclists, families, and football matches in the dust beyond the kerb. The 19th-century Stadio Foro Italico anchors the south end; the Porta Felice the north. Stay on the official promenade after dark.
