Porta Felice

Porta Felice was built between 1582 and 1637 as the seaward terminus of Via Maqueda's continuation east — the city's ceremonial axis from the Royal Palace down through the Quattro Canti to the sea. The two great square pylons of the gate frame the view from the Foro Italico into the heart of the old town. Unlike most city gates, Porta Felice has no arch — the central space was kept open for the Senate of Palermo's processions to pass through with their tall banners.

The gate suffered serious bomb damage in 1943 and has been restored in stages since. The seafront beyond is the Foro Italico promenade. Best photographed in late afternoon light.
