Kotor's old town is compact and entirely walkable — a UNESCO-listed maze of marble-paved lanes, Romanesque churches, and small piazzas. The main squares are Trg od Oružja (the Arms Square, where the clocktower stands), Trg od Brašna (the Flour Square), and Piazza Pjaca. Cats are everywhere: Kotor has adopted the stray cat as its unofficial symbol, and several small cat museums and shops have sprung up to celebrate the fact.
Allow an hour to wander freely; an extra hour if you stop in the cathedral and the Maritime Museum. The old town has three gates — the Sea Gate (the main entrance from the waterfront), the North Gate, and the River Gate — all worth looking at for the carved inscriptions and reliefs.
