The Ladder of Kotor (Lestve Kotora) is the historic donkey path that climbs from the bay up to the Lovćen plateau in 70 switchbacks — for centuries the only land route between Kotor and the Montenegrin interior. The Serpentine road, built in the 1880s, replaced it for vehicles, but the original path is still passable on foot.
The full climb takes about three hours up and two back down, gaining around 900 metres. The trail is well-marked from the back of the old town near the Church of St Eustache, but it is unshaded and steep — go early in the morning, carry plenty of water, and watch for loose stones on the descent. A shorter version (two hours up) ends at Krstac, where you can pick up the road and bus back down.
