Cathedral of Saint Tryphon

Romanesque cathedral with medieval treasury and relics from 809

The Cathedral of Saint Tryphon is Kotor's finest building and one of the best-preserved Romanesque churches on the Adriatic. Construction began in 1166 on the site of an earlier church, and the interior holds a treasury of medieval art: silver-gilt reliefs, a 14th-century ciborium over the altar, and frescoes that survived the 1979 earthquake in remarkably good condition. There is a small entrance fee; the cathedral faces the main square, Trg od Oružja.

A story
When Venetian merchants brought Tryphon's relics to Kotor in 809, they had intended to take them to Venice. A sudden calm at sea, which lifted only when they turned toward Kotor, was taken as a sign that the saint wanted to remain here.
