Mausoleum of Njegoš

The Mausoleum of Petar II Petrović-Njegoš sits on the summit of Mount Lovćen at 1,657 metres, accessible by a 461-step climb through a tunnel cut into the mountain. The current mausoleum, completed in 1974 to a design by the Yugoslav sculptor Ivan Meštrović, replaced an earlier chapel; the new building has been controversial in Montenegro ever since, attacked by some as an act of Yugoslav-era cultural imposition.

Inside, two enormous female figures in black granite flank the tomb, holding the seated statue of Njegoš under a vaulted gold-mosaic ceiling. The terrace outside takes in a view that is supposed, on the clearest days, to reach across the Adriatic to Italy. The summit is often above the cloud line, which is part of the experience. Open daily May–October; entry around €5. Wear warm clothing — the wind is fierce at the top.
