The Kotor Serpentine is the old road that climbs from the bay to the Lovćen plateau in 25 numbered hairpin turns, gaining 900 metres of altitude in less than 10 kilometres. Built by Austrian engineers in the 1880s and never substantially widened since, the road is a slim ribbon cut into the cliff with views back over the entire bay.
Drive it slowly. There are two recognised viewpoints — Vidikovac Krstac about halfway up, and a higher pull-off near hairpin 25 — and a string of unmarked roadside spots where you can pull over for a photograph. The descent in the afternoon, with the bay turning gold below, is the better direction for the light. Avoid in the rain — the road is narrow, the surface slick, and oncoming buses are not always patient.
