Cats Museum

The Cats Museum is a charmingly absurd little institution in a single room in the old town — a private collection of cat-themed prints, postcards, posters, advertisements, and ephemera assembled over decades. The displays are unapologetically hand-curated, with handwritten labels in several languages.

Kotor has adopted the stray cat as its unofficial mascot — they sleep on every warm wall and accept tribute in the form of dropped sardines from cafe diners — so the museum doubles as a kind of civic shrine. Entry is a few euros, and proceeds go to a local cat welfare charity. Allow half an hour; you will leave smiling.

A story
The collection began with the private cat memorabilia of a Venetian aristocrat, Francesca von Habsburg, who saw Kotor's stray cat population during a visit and decided the city was the natural home for her hoard. A small dedicated museum opened in 2013; the entry fees go to a feeding-and-neutering programme for the local strays.
