Church of Our Lady of Remedy

Our Lady of Remedy (Gospa od Zdravlja) sits halfway up the climb to the fortress, perched on a rocky outcrop above the city walls. The small whitewashed chapel is a useful waypoint on the ascent — a place to catch your breath and admire the view of the red rooftops and the bay beyond.

The chapel is usually open during daylight hours. The walls inside are hung with votive offerings — small silver plaques, written prayers, fading photographs. From the terrace outside, the view runs the length of the bay and is one of the best photo points on the whole walk.

A story
The small church, built in 1518, was a votive offering for deliverance from one of the plague outbreaks that periodically swept the bay. Pilgrims still climb the 1,350 steps from the old town to leave candles at its altar, in thanks for healing or in hope of it.
