Trg od Oružja, the Square of Arms, is the largest and busiest of Kotor's piazzas — the place where the Venetian republic kept its powder magazine and stored weapons for the defence of the bay. Today it is the natural centre of the old town, lined with cafes whose tables push out across the polished marble flagstones in summer.
The 17th-century Clock Tower at one end is the square's set-piece monument; the medieval pillory in front of it was used as a public shaming post until well into the eighteenth century. Most visitors come here on the way in from the Sea Gate. The cafes are reliably expensive — sit at one for a coffee and the view, but eat your dinner somewhere quieter.
