Church of Saint Nicholas

The Church of Saint Nicholas, on Trg svetog Luke just north of the smaller Church of St Luke, is Kotor's main Orthodox church and a relatively recent building — completed in 1909 on the site of an earlier Dominican monastery destroyed by fire in 1896. The twin square belltowers and Greek-cross plan are unusual for the city, more Athens than Adriatic.

Inside, the iconostasis is a striking screen of polished marble and silver-rimmed icons; the air smells of beeswax and incense. The church is generally open during daylight hours; visitors are asked to dress modestly and refrain from photography during services.
