Capitoline Wolf Statue

A bronze copy of the Roman Capitoline Wolf, gifted by Mussolini in 1921

The bronze Capitoline Wolf on Eroilor Avenue is one of several copies Mussolini's Italy gifted to Romania in 1921 to underline the country's claim to Latin descent — the original is in Rome's Capitoline Museums and shows the she-wolf suckling Romulus and Remus. Cluj's version was placed near the heart of the city as a statement of Romanian-Latin identity.

It's a small monument but a culturally loaded one — and within easy walking distance of Piața Unirii on the route to the Orthodox Cathedral. Take a moment to read the inscription if you read Italian.

A story
Mussolini sent identical copies of the Capitoline Wolf to several Romanian cities in 1921 to reinforce the kinship between Latin Italy and Latin Romania — a piece of cultural diplomacy that aged awkwardly. Cluj's copy was removed under the Communists and restored in 1973.
