Transfiguration Cathedral

Greek-Catholic cathedral in a former Minorite friars' church near the centre

The Transfiguration Cathedral — also called the Minorites' Church — was built by the Franciscan Minorite order in the mid-18th century in a clean baroque style. After the Greek-Catholic Church was granted the building in 1924, the interior was adapted for Byzantine-rite worship while keeping the original architecture.

The combination is unusual: baroque vaults and white walls above a wooden iconostasis and Eastern-rite liturgy. Greek-Catholicism — Byzantine in form but Catholic in communion — has a strong following in Transylvania, and this is its most important cathedral. The interior is generally open during the day for visitors.
