Pharmacy Museum (Hintz House)

A 16th-century pharmacy on Piața Unirii, in continuous use as an apothecary for centuries

The Hintz House on Piața Unirii operated as a working pharmacy from 1573 until the Communist regime nationalised it in 1949 — nearly four centuries on the same spot. The Pharmacy Museum, opened in 1954, preserves the cabinets, jars, mortars, and ledgers from that long history.

The collection runs through three rooms: the front shop with its painted wooden shelves of jars, the laboratory at the back with stills and balances, and the cellar with the more curious materia medica including a small lump of bituminous "mummy" that was once sold by the gram. A genuinely unusual small museum, easily combined with a stop on the main square.

A story
The basement contains powdered mummy, a sought-after early-modern medicinal ingredient sold here by the gram into the 18th century, alongside crocodile bile and unicorn horn (in fact narwhal tusk). The records show a thriving trade.
