Zoological Museum

A 19th-century university natural history collection, charmingly unchanged

The Zoological Museum, in the Babeș-Bolyai University building on Strada Clinicilor, has barely been touched since it was assembled in the 19th century. The collections — stuffed birds, mounted skeletons, jars of preserved fish — sit in the original wooden cases under the original brass fittings, lit by the original windows.

It's a niche visit but a memorable one for anyone interested in the history of natural science. The exhibits are labelled in Romanian (some also in Latin and German), and the silence inside is total. Half an hour suffices, but the atmosphere is what stays with you.
