Dormition of the Theotokos Cathedral

The 1933 Romanian Orthodox cathedral, a Byzantine landmark on Piața Avram Iancu

The Orthodox Cathedral, finished in 1933 in a Brâncovenesc-Byzantine style, anchors Piața Avram Iancu opposite the Romanian Opera. The vast central dome and four corner towers were designed to assert the new Romanian presence in Cluj after the 1918 unification.

The interior is covered in frescoes by Anastase Demian and other Romanian artists of the 1930s — heavily gilded, intense, and worth a quiet half-hour. Sunday morning services fill the church and spill onto the square. The cathedral has its own metropolitan and is the most important Orthodox church in Transylvania.
