A few minutes' walk west of Piața Unirii, on Strada Matei Corvin, stands a sturdy stone house with Gothic windows where Matthias Corvinus was born in 1443. The future king's father, the Transylvanian commander John Hunyadi, was lodging here when his son arrived. Today the building houses part of the Art and Design University.
The exterior is the main attraction. Look for the small bronze plaque and the carved arms. The interior is normally closed to visitors except during occasional student exhibitions, but the lane itself — quiet, cobbled, lined with old buildings — is one of the most evocative corners of medieval Cluj.
