Cluj's Central Park was laid out in the 1830s as one of the first public parks in the region, on what had been a flood plain of the Someș. The chestnut and plane trees that line the main paths date from the original planting. At its centre is a small lake with rowing boats in summer and a skating rink in winter.
The park's elegant pavilion — the so-called Casino, now a cultural centre — stands on the lake's southern shore. The walking is good, the cafes around the edges are pleasant, and on summer weekends the park fills with families. Cross the bridge to the southern end of the park and you reach the Cluj Arena and the riverside path.
