Medieval lanes and Roman walls in Barcelona's historic core

The Barri Gòtic is the oldest part of Barcelona, a tangle of narrow medieval lanes built on top of the Roman settlement of Barcino. Fragments of the squared Roman wall are still visible along Tapineria and Sots-Tinent Navarro to the north, and around Plaça Nova to the west.

The cathedral of Santa Eulàlia anchors the quarter. Its 14th-century cloister, home to thirteen white geese, is free to enter and one of the most peaceful spots in the old city. From there, wander south through Plaça del Rei, where the Museu d'Història de la Ciutat lets you walk through excavated Roman streets beneath the square.

The quarter gets crowded on weekends, especially along the stretch between the cathedral and La Rambla. For a quieter experience, head east toward Carrer de Montcada and the edge of El Born, where the medieval fabric feels less polished and fewer tour groups pass through.
