Built for the 1929 International Exhibition, the Teatre Grec is an open-air amphitheatre set into a former stone quarry on the lower slopes of Montjuïc, just above Poble-sec. Modelled loosely on the classical Greek theatre at Epidaurus, it has tiered stone seating sweeping down toward a stage backed by the sheer rock face of the old quarry, with a formal garden of cypresses and a long water channel laid out in front.
For most of the year the gardens are simply a peaceful place to sit, but each summer the theatre becomes the centrepiece of the Grec Festival, Barcelona's main performing-arts season, when the stage hosts music, dance and drama under the stars. It is a steep but rewarding walk up from the Poble-sec metro, and even on a quiet day the combination of greenery, stone and silence makes it one of Montjuïc's most atmospheric corners.
