The Barranca de Oblatos is the other major canyon on Guadalajara's northern edge — less visited than Huentitán but arguably more dramatic. The gorge cuts deep into the volcanic plateau, with the Rio Grande de Santiago at the bottom, and trails descend from the rim to the valley floor for those willing to make the steep climb back up. A zipline operates at one section of the rim for those who want to appreciate the depth without walking it.
The surrounding area is less developed than the zoo side of Huentitán, which makes it quieter and more genuinely wild. Take a taxi to the rim and arrange for pickup — the neighbourhood near the canyon edge is not one for extended wandering after dark.
