Hospicio Cabanas

UNESCO World Heritage orphanage with Orozco's stunning murals

A UNESCO World Heritage Site and Guadalajara's cultural crown jewel. Built in the early 1800s as an orphanage, the Hospicio now houses the Instituto Cultural Cabanas. The main attraction is Jose Clemente Orozco's series of murals covering the chapel walls and dome -- powerful, politically charged work that ranks alongside Rivera and Siqueiros. The building itself, with its 23 courtyards, is a masterpiece of Neoclassical architecture. Open Tuesday to Sunday.

A story
Jose Clemente Orozco painted the Hospicio's murals between 1937 and 1939. His 'Man of Fire' on the chapel dome is designed so the figure appears to rise into the sky from any angle you view it.
