Tonalá, east of Tlaquepaque in the Guadalajara metropolitan area, is where the city's craftspeople actually make the things that get sold in Tlaquepaque's galleries. The streets are lined with workshops producing furniture, wrought iron, blown glass, papier-mâché, and ceramics — often at prices well below what you will pay anywhere else. On Thursdays and Sundays, the weekly market takes over the main streets with vendors from across the region.
This is a better destination for serious shoppers than Tlaquepaque: less polished, more actual production visible, and with more room to negotiate. The restaurants near the central plaza are good and inexpensive.
