Avenida Chapultepec is the pedestrian-friendly main street of Colonia Americana and Guadalajara's most self-consciously hip strip — lined with cafes, bars, bookshops, and the kind of independent restaurants that are harder to find in the more tourist-oriented historic centre. On Thursday evenings and weekends, the street fills with an artisan market and food stalls that draw a strongly local crowd.
This is one of the better places to experience contemporary Guadalajara rather than colonial Guadalajara: the conversations are louder, the music spills from open doors, and the average age of the clientele is a decade younger than what you find near the Cathedral plazas.
