Bass Museum of Art

Address 2100 Collins Avenue, Miami Beach

The Bass is Miami Beach's contemporary art museum, housed in a 1930s Art Deco building expanded by architect Arata Isozaki. The permanent collection spans European Old Masters through to contemporary photography and new media, but the rotating exhibitions are the real draw — the Bass has a knack for staging ambitious, site-specific installations that fill the building's dramatic central gallery.

story: > The museum began as the private collection of John and Johanna Bass, who donated over 500 works to Miami Beach in 1963. The original building was designed in 1930 as the city's first public library.
