Coconut Grove Playhouse

Address 3500 Main Highway, Coconut Grove

This Mediterranean Revival theatre opened in 1927 as a movie palace and became one of the most important regional theatres in the country during the mid-20th century. Samuel Beckett's Waiting for Godot had its American premiere here in 1956 — it was so poorly received that half the audience walked out at intermission. The building has been closed since 2006 and is awaiting a long-debated restoration. Even shuttered, the ornate facade on Main Highway is worth a look.

story: > The 1956 Miami production of Waiting for Godot was staged with an all-Black cast directed by Alan Schneider. Audiences expecting light entertainment were baffled. Beckett later called it "a disaster."
