Crandon Park, Key Biscayne

Crandon Park occupies 808 acres on the northern half of Key Biscayne, just south of Miami across the Rickenbacker Causeway, and contains one of the best beaches in the city. The beach is wide, relatively uncrowded compared to South Beach, and faces calm, shallow water on the bay side rather than the Atlantic surf. The park also contains a tennis center that hosts the Miami Open — one of the premier events on the ATP/WTA tour — every March.

Beyond the beach, the park includes a nature centre, a tram tour through the hammock forest, and access to the Crandon Golf Course. Key Biscayne as a whole is a pleasant contrast to mainland Miami — quieter, greener, and with a village atmosphere in the town centre. Bill Baggs Cape Florida State Park at the southern tip of the island has a lighthouse dating to 1825 and some of the best snorkelling accessible from the Miami area.
