Wynwood's transformation from neglected warehouse district to Miami's most vibrant arts neighbourhood is one of the great urban turnarounds in American cities. It started with the Wynwood Walls — a curated outdoor museum of street art murals on the walls of former warehouses — and has spread outward to cover dozens of blocks with murals, galleries, breweries, restaurants, and shops.
The Walls themselves, at NW 2nd Avenue and 25th Street, feature work by internationally known street artists. Beyond them, nearly every building surface in the neighbourhood carries some form of art, and the Museum of Graffiti gives the form its first dedicated museum. The Rubell family moved their landmark contemporary collection west to Allapattah in 2019, but the Margulies Collection at the Warehouse keeps a serious art anchor inside Wynwood itself. Wynwood is also home to some of Miami's best casual dining — the neighbourhood has a density of good restaurants and craft breweries that rivals any part of the city.
Saturday afternoon is the best time to visit, when the galleries are open and the streets are busy but not overwhelming.
